Boys soccer: East Ridge at Lake Brantley among district games to watch

Bishop Moore, Windermere High and Lake Nona enter boys soccer district tournaments as the Orlando area’s top-ranked teams.

The Hornets (18-2-0), state runners-up last year, ended the regular season at No. 7 among all classifications in FHSAA playoff power rankings and No. 1 in Class 4A Region 2.

Unbeaten Windermere (13-0-1) and Lake Nona (12-0-2) are the teams to beat in a 7A district that includes Cypress Creek (11-2-3) and Olympia (9-6-1).

Windermere is No. 1 in 7A Region 2 and No. 2 in its class. Lake Nona is No. 2 in the region and No. 4 in 7A.

Boys soccer district tournaments play out over the next two weeks. Four district champions and four others based on FHSAA rankings advance to regional quarterfinals next month.

Notable district games on schedule Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are detailed below.


7A District 4

No. 5 Orlando University (7-7-1) at No. 4 Winter Park (3-5-4), 7

Buzz: Winter Park is winless at home this season (0-4-2) under first-year head coach Stephen Wright. The Wildcats won 3-0 at University on Dec. 21. Winter Park, a region finalist in 2023, has scored 19 goals and allowed 23 goals. Winner plays Monday at No. 1 Timber Creek (8-2-3).

7A District 5

No. 4 Olympia (9-6-1) vs. No. 5 Freedom (5-5-6), 4

Buzz: This is part of tripleheader at Deputy Scott Pine Community Park in Windermere. Freedom has scored 41 goals and allowed 28 goals. Olympia, under new coach Raymond Bornacelli, has 40 goals scored and 25 goals against. Winner plays top seed Windermere (13-0-1) on Friday.

6A District 5

No. 5 Lyman (6-8-1) at No. 4 Edgewater (4-8-3), 6

Buzz: The teams have played closely contested games in their past two meetings. Edgewater, 6-0-1 in the series since 2018, prevailed on penalty kicks in last year’s district quarterfinal, then won 2-1 on Jan. 17. Winner plays Friday vs. No. 1 New Smyrna Beach (21-1-1) at Oviedo High.

6A District 7

No. 6 East River (6-8-1) at No. 3 St. Cloud (11-4-2), 6

Buzz: The Bulldogs scored twice in the second half on Dec. 12 to secure a 2-2 tie at East River. St. Cloud is 8-0-0 at home. Seniors Anthony Schipani (9 goals), Quinten Gray (8 goals) and Ryan Heron (5 goals) lead East River. Winner plays Friday at No. 2 Melbourne (10-4-2).


7A District 3

No. 5 Clermont East Ridge (10-6-1) at No. 4 Lake Brantley (10-4-1), 7

Buzz: This is their first meeting since 2020. East Ridge, the defending 7A state champ, has scored 39 goals and given up 26 goals. Lake Brantley has 38 goals scored and 20 goals against. Winner plays No. 1 West Orange (8-4-1) next Tuesday at East Ridge.

3A District 5

No. 5 Cornerstone Charter (7-6-3) at No. 4 The First Academy (9-4-2), 6

Buzz: TFA is 8-0-1 all-time vs. Cornerstone, including a 2-1 district tournament win in 2023 and 1-0 win in 2022. Senior Bodie Rogers has 22 goals and sophomore Louis Martins has 8 goals and 14 assists for TFA. Winner plays Saturday at No. 1 Lake Highland Prep (7-6-1).


2A District 5

No. 3 Geneva School (6-7-0) at No. 2 The Master’s Academy (4-11-1), 5

Buzz: The winner advances to the district championship game next week at Master’s Academy. The host Eagles, losers in 9 of their past 11 games, defeated Geneva 2-0 on Nov. 16. Junior Palmer Hendrix leads Geneva with 23 goals scored. Sophomore Dylan Poweska has 12 assists.
