Boys hockey roundup: Willmar Cardinals win in OT while honoring a hero

As far as the game on the ice, the Willmar boys hockey team completed a comeback en route to a 3-2 overtime victory over Wadena-Deer Creek.

The Cardinals, who are 7-16-1 overall, found themselves trailing 2-0 into the first intermission after out-shooting Wadena-Deer Creek 23-6 in the first period.

Carson Davis capitalized on an odd-man rush, burying a cross-ice pass from Cooper Ness to put Wadena-Deer Creek on the board less than a minute into the contest. In the closing minutes of the period, Ness extended the Wolverines' lead to two.

After a scoreless second period, Jordan Gorans and Deiken Carruthers each scored to knot the game at 2-2. Carruthers' tying goal came on a power-play.

Gibson Horyza scored the game-winning goal in overtime to seal Willmar's win. The sophomore leads the Cardinals with 15 goals and 24 points.

The Cardinals conclude regular season play against River Lakes at 4 p.m. Friday at Willmar Civic Center Arena.

Morris/Benson area closed out its regular season with a win against Breckenridge/Wahpeton at the Ella Stern & Harry Stern Sports Arena in Wahpeton, North Dakota.

MBA (14-11-0) begins play in the Section 6A playoffs on Tuesday.

Hutchinson improved to 7-15-2 with a win against Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato at Burich Arena.

The Dragons (4-19-1) wrap up regular season play against New Ulm at 7 p.m. Thursday at Litchfield Civic Arena.
