Boys hockey: Faribault extends Willmar's losing streak, 7-4

Jan. 29—WILLMAR — Both Willmar and Faribault were ready for their four-game losing streaks to end on Monday night.

Turns out, the slump ended for the visiting Falcons.

Behind a hat trick from Oliver Linneman, Faribault won the non-conference boys hockey matchup 7-4 at the Willmar Civic Center Arena.

The Falcons are 7-12-0 on the season. The Cardinals drop to 5-15-1.

Faribault jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead after goals by Ethan Amundson and Tommy Kunze.

The next two periods were defined by goals in quick succession.

The Falcons started that flurry with back-to-back goals within 14 seconds from Kunze and Linnemann. That put Faribault ahead 4-0. Willmar responded in kind later in the period as Aden Jacobson and Eli Hagen had back-to-back goals in a 20-second span.

It didn't stop in the third period as the teams traded goals over the first 80 seconds. The Cardinals struck first with a tally by Deiken Carruthers 23 seconds into the period. Twenty-two seconds later, Faribault went back up by two with a Logan Peroutka score. Thirty-five seconds after that, it was a one-goal game once again thanks to Willmar's Henry Michelson. Michaelson got an assist from Gibson Horyza, who finished with three helpers.

The Cardinals were unable to tie the game. Linnemann made sure of that with two straight goals at 8:17 and 11:03 to seal the Falcons' victory.

Willmar next plays Redwood Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Redwood Area Community Center in Redwood Falls.
