Boys basketball roundup: Willmar Cardinals struggle at Rocori Spartans, 85-62

Jan. 19—COLD SPRING — The Willmar boys basketball team fell to 1-13 after an 85-62 Central Lakes Conference loss to Rocori on Friday.

Four players scored in double figures for Rocori, led by Grant Tylutki's 21 points. TJ Starkey had 19 points, Tyler Prom 16 and Broderic Woods 10 for the Spartans.

Avery Christensen and Will Sportel had nice games for Willmar. Christensen had 21 points and three assists. Sportel scored 18 points.

The Cardinals play host to Fergus Falls at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Willmar.

Senior forward Devin Ashling made a layup with 18 seconds left to lift host Montevideo past Morris/Chokio-Alberta.

Morris/CA got a shot off that missed. Montevideo's Griffin Epema got the rebound and was fouled with 4.2 seconds left. He missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Morris/CA tossed up a 27-footer by Drew Huebner that missed.

"It was just physical and slow-paced," Montevideo head coach Derek Webb said. "Both teams played really scrappily defensively."

Carson Boike led the Thunder Hawks with 14 points. Cooper Dack and Ashling each had 13.

Riley Asmus scored 24 points and Charles Hanson added 13 for the Tigers.

The Thunder Hawks play host to West Central Area at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Montevideo.

Jack Gross scored 16 points and William Penkert had 15 in BOLD's loss to West Central Area (No. 6, Class A) at Barrett.

The Warriors play Yellow Medicine East at 7:15 p.m. Monday at Granite Falls.

MACCRAY got double digits in scoring from four players in its win at Canby.

Xavier Noble led the Wolverines with 16 points, adding nine rebounds. Isaac Post had 12 points and six assists. Willie Miller scored 11 points. Grayson Ahrenholz added 10.

MACCRAY plays host to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Clara City.

Brayson Boike scored 33 points and Drew Hjelmeland added 23 as Dawson-Boyd blasted Renville County West at Renville.

Gunner Liebl added 12 for the Blackjacks, who are ranked second in the state in Class A, according to the Minnesota Basketball News.

Ryan Schrupp had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Jaguars.

Dawson-Boyd plays host to Minneota at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Dawson. RCW plays Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kerkhoven.

Lac qui Parle Valley improved its won-lost record to 5-9 with the victory over Lakeview at Cottonwood.

Lakeview fell to 4-11.

LQPV plays Lower Brule (S.D.) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the DVC Classic at Deubrook High School in White, South Dakota.

Paynesville improved to 5-0 in the Central Minnesota Conference with the victory over Maple Lake at Paynesville.

Maple Lake fell to 0-12.

Paynesville plays co-conference leader Eden Valley-Watkins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eden Valley.

Annandale hit 14 3-pointers and shot 50% from the field in a win over Litchfield at Annandale.

Colton Purcell and Nick Walter both hit four 3-pointers for the Cardinals. Purcell had a team-high 18 points. Walter had 12.

Jacob Dietel paced the Dragons with 13 points.

Litchfield plays Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Howard Lake.

Harold Habben had a double-double for Benson in a non-conference win against Border West at Graceville.

Habben finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Landon Skarsten paced the Braves with 19 points. Joseph Pagel hauled in 13 rebounds to go with six points.

The Buccaneers' Holden Rinke led all scorers with 22 points.

The Braves play host to Sauk Centre at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Benson.
