Boys basketball roundup: Dynamic duo paces BOLD Warriors

Jan. 22—GRANITE FALLS — Jack Gross and William Penkert set the tone for a BOLD victory on Monday.

Gross and Penkert combined for 46 points in the Warriors' 71-39 victory over Yellow Medicine East in a non-conference boys basketball game at Espeland Gymnasium.

Gross, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the opening half. He shot 12 of 12 (83%) from the field. Gross also had seven rebounds and four steals.

Penkert, a 6-3 junior center, wasn't far behind with 15 first-half points. He finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

BOLD led 43-28 at halftime.

DJ Whitebuffalo led YME with 12 points, all in the first half. Whitebuffalo is a 6-1 senior guard. Drew Almich added eight points and seven rebounds while Connor Fagen had eight points.

The Warriors' defense held the Sting to 32% shooting from the field.

The Sting have lost five games in a row.

BOLD plays host to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bird Island. YME next plays Central Minnesota Christian School in a Camden Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Prinsburg.

Andrew Meyers hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 15 seconds left to lift Russell-Tyler-Ruthton past MACCRAY in overtime at Clara City.

RTR led 35-31 at halftime. The teams were tied 68-68 after regulation.

Isaac Post led the Wolverines with 20 points. Willie Miller had 17 points and Grayson Ahrenholz added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Wadsworth had 10 points and 10 assists.

MACCRAY, ranked No. 18 in Class A by Minnesota Basketball News, plays host to Lakeview for a Camden Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. Thursday back at Clara City.

Eden Valley-Watkins, ranked fifth in Class AA by the Minnesota Basketball News, rolled past Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Eden Valley.

The Eagles were led by Noah Stommes' 18 points. Wyatt Moehrle scored 15 and Landon Neiman had 12.

KMS, which fell to 8-7, got 11 points from seniors DeAndre Holloway and Jared Cortez.

Holloway, a 6-foot-7 forward, added nine rebounds, five blocks and two steals to his 11 points.

The Fighting Saints play host to Renville County West for a Camden Conference game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kerkhoven.

Brady Reinertson scored 23 points in Community Christian School's overtime loss to Lake Region Christian School in a Christian Athletic League game at Baxter.

Reinertson, an eighth-grade guard, also led the Eagles with five assists. He tied sophomore Pablo Peñalba, who had 10 points and seven rebounds, with a team-best four steals and added four rebounds.

Andrew Borstad, a junior, notched 18 points for CCS. David Mulder, also a junior, had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Eagles next host Maplewood Academy at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Willmar.
