Boys basketball: Roncalli wins holiday tournament at Batesville

Jan. 1—BATESVILLE — The Bulldogs hosted Columbus North, Pendleton Heights and Roncalli in holiday tournament action.

In the opening round, Columbus North rallied in the fourth quarter to knock off the Bulldogs 56-53.

Batesville lead 19-11 after the first quarter. The Bull Dogs cut the deficit to 29-27 at the half. Batesville outscored the Bull Dogs 15-13 in the third quarter to lead 44-40 heading to the fourth. Columbus North outscored Batesville 16-9 over the final eight minutes to secure the 56-53 win.

Columbus North shot 42 percent from the field. Batesville shot 36.7 percent. The Bull Dogs did not miss from the charity stripe, going 7-of-7. Batesville was 9-of-14 from the free throw line.

The Bull Dogs outscored Batesville 12-5 off turnovers and 24-18 in the paint.

Cade Kaiser and Gus Prickel scored 13 points each for Batesville. Sam Johnson added 11 points. Trenten Luers scored eight points. Brayden Maple and Jack Grunkemeyer both scored four points.

Johnson and Luers both pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Roncalli defeated Pendleton Heights 66-56 in the second game of the tournament.

In the consolation game, Batesville knocked off Pendleton Heights 69-62.

Batesville led 23-17 after the first quarter and 36-25 at the half. The Arabians outscored the Bulldogs 37-33 in the second half.

Batesville shot 52.4 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. The Bulldogs outscored the Arabians 18-12 in the paint and 9-4 on transition points.

The Bulldogs had four players score in double figures: Kaiser 21, Grunkemeyer 16, Prickel 14 and Johnson 13. Maple scored five points. Johnson completed a double-double with 10 rebounds and four assists. Kaiser also dished out fuor assists and grabbed four rebounds. Grunkemeyer had a team-high three steals.

Roncalli won the tournament title 56-46 over Columbus North.


RUSHVILLE — The Lions played host to Union County for the final game of 2023. The Patriots improved to 4-6 on the year with a 37-31 victory. Rushville drops to 1-10.

Union County jumped out to an 8-4 lead after the first quarter. Rushville outscored the Patriots 13-10 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 18-17 at the half.

Union County stretched the lead to 27-22 after three quarters. The Patriots had five players score in the fourth quarter to hold off the Lions 37-31.

Rushville was led by Keegan Bowles with 11 points. Quentin Cain finished with seven points. Nick Jarman scored four points. Owen Zachery, Clayton Chase and Adrian Apodaca all scored two points.

Bowles had a team-high eight rebounds. Jarman pulled down four rebounds. Bowles had a team-high two assists and Danny Corn had a team-high three steals.

Union County was led by Gavin Davis with 13 points. Kyle Sams and Logan Harris both scored eight points. Mason Stewart added four points. Logan Boone and Nick Watterson both scored two points.

Bob Wettig Tournament

RICHMOND — The host Red Devils of Richmond won the annual Bob Wettig Tournament title with a victory over Heritage Christian.

Greensburg finished third with a 51-48 victory over Indianapolis Tindley. Greensburg's Jack McKinsey was named to the all-tournament team.

North Decatur rounded out the tournament with a 66-61 win over Indianapolis HomeSchool in the 11th place game.
