Phoenix police said an officer attempted to stop a speeding vehicle, which drove through a schoolyard and hit another vehicle with the boy inside.

A boy was hospitalized with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening on Friday afternoon after a vehicle speeding near a school zone struck a vehicle that the child was inside.

Sgt. Vincent Cole, a department spokesperson, said an officer saw the speeding vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the driver kept going and drove through a schoolyard and out of the officer's sight.

Police later found the driver had crashed into another vehicle near Tatum Boulevard and Sheena Drive, causing the boy's injuries. The driver who originally fled police was arrested, though it remains unclear what charges he will face.
