Box Office: ‘Justice League’ Takes Off in First International Markets
Warner Bros.’ “Justice League” launched with $8.5 million on Wednesday in nine overseas markets.
Brazil led the way with $3.7 million at 1,509 screens on its Republic Day holiday for the biggest opening day of all time, with a 74% box office share of the top five films. It’s the industry’s widest release ever in that market.
South Korea generated $1.1 million on 1,195 screens in previews, taking a 50% share of the top five films in the market. France also saw $1.1 million in first-day grosses at 687 screens, 19% ahead of “Wonder Woman.” Indonesia opened strong with $895,000 on 888 screens, exceeding “Thor: Ragnarok” by 8% in the highest opening for a Warner Bros. title.
An additional 38 markets open Thursday, including Germany, Italy, Russia, Korea, and Australia. The U.S. debut is on Friday amid forecasts of an opening weekend of $110 million at 4,040 North American locations.
Stakes are high for Warner Bros., which hasn’t revealed the cost of “Justice League” — estimated to be as much as $300 million. The movie is the fifth installment of its DC Extended Universe, aimed at duplicating the success of Disney-Marvel’s interconnected franchises.
Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher star. Amy Adams, Amber Heard, Jeremy Irons, J.K. Simmons, and Willem Dafoe also appear in the film. Zack Snyder began shooting “Justice League” in April of 2016, from a script by Chris Terrio. Joss Whedon — director of Marvel-Disney’s two “Avengers” movies — finished the directing duties following the tragic suicide of Snyder’s daughter in March.
