Boston’s Romeo Langford soaks in hitting the game-winner, but knows there’s work to be done

While there are plenty of reasonable explanations as to why a former lottery pick in Boston Celtics third-year wing Romeo Langford hasn’t quite carved a role out for himself in the league just yet ranging from injury luck to COVID-19 to the pandemic itself, the NBA is an unforgiving league.

The former No. 14 pick will need to show some growth this season to assure himself a spot in the league with more security than the sort his defense might provide him on the NBA’s fringes. But in the very first preseason contest of the Celtics’ 2021-22 campaign, Langford hit the game-winning shot with an air of quiet confidence that bodes very well for a positive outcome as described above.

“It felt good,” said Langford. “It felt good to get out there and knock down a couple shots and knock down a big one.”

“It’s just a good feeling,” he added, referencing the ebullient eruption of the bench in response to his dagger. “Just knowing I have a lot of people rooting for me, having my back. It’s just a good feeling.”

Langford didn’t remain with his head in the clouds about what could easily have been a loss if his shot had missed, however, and commented a bit on what the team needs to work on as a whole to improve.

With one of the most active offseasons in the league, the team is full of new faces and the playing styles and capabilities that come with them — something the Indiana product zeroed in on.

“Honestly, just communication because it’s all new for us,” he explained, “everyone on the court. So, we’re really going to have to communicate even more and get through it together. It’s all about communication.”

The New Albany native even took a moment to shed some light on why he was sporting a new uniform number this season.

“I just thought 45 was a little big, it made me look a little chunkier,” he related with a bit of a wry grin. “I’m a little bit smaller and I got some weight off of me — it helped me jump a little higher.”

The opportunity to move his game a little higher as well is there for Langford if he can turn in supporting performances off the bench as he did Monday with any sort of consistency.

And for both his and Boston’s sake moving forward, we hope he does.
