Boston Police Department honors Red Auerbach for Black History Month

Bill Russell is a Civil Rights pioneer and Celtics legend. He is absolutely the type of American hero worthy of honoring and studying for Black History Month.

As architect of multiple Celtics dynasties, Red Auerbach is also worthy of praise. But maybe not in this context:


The Boston Police Department later deleted the tweet, called attention to its Russell tweet from a week-and-a-half ago and apologized:




The problem isn’t that people were offended. The problem was that the BPD couldn’t think of another black Bostonian worthy of honoring beyond Russell so, having already named him, just moved on to his white boss – which speaks to why we need a specific Black History Month in the first place.
