Ezequiel Carrera enters 'catch of the year' conversation after robbing Jacoby Ellsbury

Yahoo Sports Minute

Ezequiel Carrera made his first start of the season for the Detroit Tigers on Monday night — and what a debut it was. The 27-year-old turned in what may have been the catch of the year (joining the likes of Dustin Ackley and Brock Holt) during the third inning of a game against the New York Yankees in the Bronx.

With the bases loaded and Jacoby Ellsbury at the plate (himself no stranger to stellar defense), the Yankees' center fielder hit a deep drive that appeared headed for extra bases. Instead, Carrera made a play that was reminiscent of a certain former center fielder.

The marvelous play also earned a priceless reaction from Derek Jeter.

Ellsbury did get a sacrifice fly out of it and the Yankees won 2-1. But Carrera's diving snag sure was something.

Not again

With the fallout from Paul George's devastating injury during a Team USA scrimmage last week still being felt, the basketball community is especially sensitive to objects being too close to the action. Witness Boston Celtics forward Kelly Olynyk's awkard moment involving a courtside billboard during a tournament in Italy.

Bieber scores!

Finally in soccer, Christopher Bieber (we're guessing no relation to Justin) scored in interesting fashion during a German fourth-division match.
