Figure skating and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series auto racing might be the most diatremically opposed sports around. From the personalities that participate in each to the fan bases that follow them, the respective disciplines on ice and pavement have very little in common. So when the Olympic champion ice dancing duo of Charlie White and Meryl Davis were asked to be grand marshals for Sunday's Pure Michigan 400, it may have raised a few eyebrows. But the Sochi gold medalists are both Michigan natives. And, of course, this isn't the first time NASCAR has gone outside the box for the role. Who could forget James Franco's ill-fated start to the 2013 Daytona 500? But if your instincts told you this might not end well, you would be correct.
White sheepishly offered a "Drivers …" with Davis adding, "…start your engines" in exceedingly underwhelming fashion. The Olympic heroes then proceeded to hear it from the Michigan International Speedway crowd, getting booed for their less-than-rousing rendition of the famous line. Not exactly the warmest welcome for the pair. But certainly an understandable one.
