Celebs Descend on London for the Olympics

Visit Britain

With just days until the London 2012 Olympics, all eyes — including those of the rich and famous — are on the host city. While you never know who will show up to take in the world-class athleticism on display, there's already buzz about some of the big names who will likely be in attendance.

Celebrity torchbearers

As the Olympic torch makes its way through London in the days leading up to the Games, it's passing through the hands of some British celebs.

Among those participating in the final week of the torch's 70-day journey are boxer Lennox Lewis, dance group Diversity, and actor David Walliams of "Little Britain" fame.

Perhaps best known to North American audiences, Rupert Grint — yes, Harry Potter's best friend Ron Weasley — will carry the torch on Wednesday, July 25.

Celebs who carried the flame on earlier legs of the relay include Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, David Beckham, The Wanted, Jamie Oliver, James McAvoy and "Doctor Who" actor Matt Smith.

Might their Olympic enthusiasm extend from the relay to actually attending the Games? Time will tell.

Royal fans

Among the royals expected to attend the Olympics are Prince Albert and his wife Princess Charlene of Monaco, who themselves have an Olympic past. Albert competed in bobsledding at five Olympic Winter Games, while Charlene swam for South Africa in the 2000 Summer Games. The duo first publicly appeared as a couple at the 2006 opening ceremonies in Turin.

Also scheduled to be in London for Olympic festivities are Denmark's royal family, including Queen Margethe II and husband Prince Henrik; Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden; Willem-Alexander, Princess Maxima and their three daughters of the Netherlands; Belgium's Prince Philippe and wife Princess Mathilde; and Norway's Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit.

Of course, the royal family everyone is most hoping to see won't disappoint: Prince Harry, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla and Prince William and his wife Kate are all expected to attend some part of the Games. Queen Elizabeth II herself will preside over the opening ceremony, topping off another big event in a Jubilee year.

George Clooney

George Clooney's had his eye on Olympics tickets since January, when the Oscar-winning actor made headlines praising this year's host city.

"I think it's fantastic that the Olympics are coming to London," he said. "There are some cities that are made for the world, not just the country they are in, and London is definitely one of them."

At the time, the swoon-worthy celeb said he was trying to get his hands on some prime tickets for the Games. "Track and field is something that I really want to come back and see. I'm trying to see if I can get some tickets."

Seems Clooney may have had some success, as more recent reports include him as one of the celebs staying in a "superyacht" at London's regenerated Docklands during the Olympics.

Brangelina and friends

Rumor has it that Hollywood's golden couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, won't just be in London during the Olympics but will also be hosting a star-studded party to kick it off, one of many behind-the-scenes VIP soirees scheduled during the games.

The couple are already in London as Angelina shoots her new film "Maleficent." Brad and Angelina are planning a fete at London's Victoria & Albert Museum on July 25, two days before the official opening ceremony.

With an invite list that reportedly includes Princes William and Harry, David and Victoria Beckham, Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, the black-tie charity event will benefit the Sports for Peace initiative.

According to reports, the A-list couple also has tickets to the official opening ceremony on July 27 and has been offered tickets to the men's 100-meter final.

Maybe George Clooney could get in with them?
