Power rankings: Sharapova stunned, but on right track

Maria Sharapova's performance last week in Los Angeles summed up her return to the WTA Tour.

After a superb win over Victoria Azarenka, Sharapova stumbled in the semifinals, losing to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta.

Such inconsistency has held back Sharapova's progress, however, the Azarenka result proved the Russian is getting back toward her peak.

She makes an appearance in this week's Yahoo! Sports Power Rankings, coming in at No. 7, while Pennetta also makes the cut at No. 8.
