Referee Deniz Aytekin escorted off the pitch under umbrella shields.
Losing 2-0 to Schalke with two men sent off in a span of 10 minutes, one St. Pauli fan decided to unleash his frustration and waste a perfectly good beer by pegging the linesman in the back of the neck with a cup two minutes form full time. Though the linesman was not hurt by the projectile beverage, referee Deniz Aytekin decided to abandon the match.
From the AP:
"We had to call off the game. There was no other choice," Aytekin said.
He pointed out that coins and lighters had also been thrown at Schiffner, who had to be examined by a doctor.
"That's totally unacceptable. It's not tolerated. I can only apologize to the linesman," St. Pauli coach Holger Stanislawski said.
Aytekin suggested the linesman was "doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances."
There was no immediate decision from league officials about whether the result would stand.
Just before St. Pauli had their first man sent off, they had a goal disallowed for being offside, which just might have prompted the fans to use that linesman for target practice. Here's video of the direct hit...
St. Pauli fans have a reputation for being a rowdy, punk rock bunch, but this really is unacceptable. I mean, that looked like it was a full beer.
