Here’s a sad Fernando Torres gingerbread cookie to end the year

The last 12 months have been peculiar for Fernando Torres. He remained one of the planet's most scrutinized and mocked footballers, but also won the Champions League (his reason for joining Chelsea in the first place) and the FA Cup. He was briefly dropped from Spain's squad in February and then went on to win Euro 2012 and the tournament's Golden Boot award on a technicality as he started only two of six matches. He was reunited with Rafa Benitez at Chelsea and has already scored more goals than he did all of last season, but it's still not good enough.

To commemorate all of this, reader Rob Seiver and his girlfriend brought DT character and Fernando Torres alter-ego Fernando Gingerbread to life -- complete with red sprinkle freckles. They made Fernando Gingerbread in two forms: smiling in his Spain kit and frowning in his Chelsea strip. They also made a gingerbread Messi pictured below "kicking the ball away from Fernando."

Thanks to Rob and his girlfriend for sharing their creations. We at DT join them in hoping that all the Fernando Gingerbreads are smiling this time next year. And that our future holds more footballers represented as delicious treats.
