NYCFC let everyone have their fun with the badge creator of their official website, but now it's time to get down to brass tacks. The club, which will join MLS in 2015, unveiled the final two options for their badge and they have now opened up a fan vote to decide which they use.
Both badges were created by New York based designer Rafael Esquer and feature none of the squirrel/Godzilla/pizza imagery available through the club's badge creator tool. Instead, they both feature a play on the letters NYC with one based on the official seal of New York City and the other inspired by the city's old subway tokens.
The two badges feature the typeface Gotham, a wholly American font inspired by the City’s signage. Born out of an in-depth study of building lettering in New York City, the monogram reflects the rich graphic language that is so much a signature of the five boroughs. The colors navy blue, white and orange are drawn from the New York City flag.
The lighter blue is obviously a carry over from co-owners Man City, but just by looking at the badges you wouldn't know their partners in the venture are the New York Yankees.
Fans are only given until Thursday, March 13 to vote at nycfc.com/vote (if they can get the page to load, as it's been hit with heavy traffic from voters). According to the club, "The badge that receives the most votes will become the bedrock of the Team’s identity and will be formally unveiled in New York City on March 20."
