Newcastle fan punches police horse during riot after derby loss

Newcastle lost 3-0 at home to bitter rivals Sunderland, so after the match their fans decided to riot in the streets of their own city. Though the shame of Millwall supporters fighting amongst themselves and against police in the stands at Wembley during their FA Cup loss to Wigan on Saturday was difficult to top, the rioting Geordies still gave it a go. One idiot even punched a police horse.

A total of 27 arrests were made in the city center and one officer was taken to the hospital. From Sky:

A Northumbria Police statement said: "The most serious incident involved a group of Newcastle fans in Central Station attempting to confront Sunderland supporters, but they were intercepted by officers from British Transport Police.

"During this incident missiles were thrown at the officers, which resulted in three injuries to officers, one of them requiring assessment at hospital."

Sunderland fans were kept away from the violence by police holding them inside the stadium.
