On Wednesday, the head groundsman at the World Cup stadium in Manaus, Brazil admitted that the pitch was in very bad shape and that an "emergency plan" would be implemented ahead of the first match to be played there — Italy v England on Saturday. And it turns out that plan was to spray-paint the brown parts green.

Workers sprayed the spotty pitch on Thursday in the hopes that it would at least look worthy of a World Cup match this weekend when the whole planet is watching. So if Wayne Rooney ends up looking like the Incredible Hulk after making a tackle, it's just the spray-paint.
