After Liverpool's Coutinho opened the scoring in the Merseyside derby in just the fifth minute, Kevin Mirallas was quick to equalize three minutes later. His goal would be overshadowed by his poor tackling later in the first half, though.
Luis Suarez put Liverpool up 2-1 in the 19th minute with an exquisite free kick that curled through a gap in the wall (gif here). But a little more than 10 minutes later, that joy turned to pain when Mirallas delivered a high boot to the back of Suarez's knee. Mirallas was only shown a yellow card for the ugly offense and was lucky to stay on the pitch. The only red was seeping from Suarez's leg.
