At a specially arranged press conference, Carles Puyol announced he will leave Barcelona at the end of the season after cutting his contract short by two years. The 35-year-old captain has been with Barca since he was 17, so for many of his younger fans and teammates, Puyol has been there for all as long as they can remember. Gerard Pique is one of those teammates.
So after attending Puyol's press conference, Pique wrote a message for his friend and teammate on Facebook. Here's a translation:
My guardian angel
The day has come. You are going. Although it is a law of life, it is impossible to imagine Barça without you. If I look back and remember Paris or Rome, the first image that comes to mind is you lifting the European Cup. In Wembley you gave the honor to Abi [Eric Abidal], a detail that still makes you larger. My generation and those that come behind do not know is a Barça without Puyi on defense, with the armband and the '5 'on the back. I guess nothing is equal.
I met you almost 6 years ago. You were the captain and team emblem and I was a kid coming to eat the world. From the first day we had a great relationship, both on and off the field. By your side I felt protected , knew that if one day I failed, you would be there to save me. You are my guardian angel.
Know that I will miss our talks in the locker room, your advice and especially your "fights" on the pitch. You are unique. It makes me laugh when they talk about finding 'the new Puyol'. They can keep looking, because they never find him.
Thanks for everything, Puyi.
The dust — it's everywhere.
