Referees are not the most beloved people for soccer fans and even for players. In this 2014 FIFA World Cup, referees have been heavily criticized for questionable calls and non-calls.
Add Radamel Falcao to the list of people criticizing officials in this World Cup.
After watching his Colombian national team fall to Brazil 2-1 in their quarterfinal match Friday, the injured star took to social media to let off a little steam and give his thoughts on Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo’s questionable officiating in the game.
On Twitter, Falcao wrote:
Para el próximo partido acuérdense de llamar al árbitro que hoy no vino.
— Radamel Falcao (@FALCAO) July 4, 2014
Translated: “For the next match, remember to call the referee, who today didn’t show up.”
While Falcao’s quote may be seen as unnecessary, there is some truth to it. Referee Carballo’s performance was questionable, to say the least. Carballo called 54 fouls in the match, but he dished out just four yellow cards. If you watched the game, you know there clearly should have been a few cards shown prior to the first yellow card given to Brazil's Thiago Silva in the 64th minute of the game.

Perhaps Carballo purposely didn't want to show yellow cards so no players are suspended for the semifinals, as FIFA rules state that after the quarterfinal stage, all yellow cards are reset and all players are give a clean slate. It shouldn't be an excuse, but it might have been the reason why no cards were shown for two-thirds of the game.
Unfortunately for Silva, he will miss the semifinal against Germany due to accumulation of yellow cards. Brazil also will be without Neymar, who suffered a broken vertebrae in the game.
It’s understandable that Falcao was frustrated, thus tweeting out his displeasure. He was not able to fully recover in time from his knee injury and missed being able to help out his national team at the World Cup. Falcao had to watch his team be eliminated by the host nation in a game where the referee was not showing much courage to show cards. It must have been utterly frustrating for Radamel Falcao.
Stay strong, Falcao. James Rodriguez and your teammates did Colombia proud in this World Cup.
