Sunday's pre-season friendly between Perugia and semi-professional side Castel del Piano was made considerably less friendly by a fight that ended with a trip to the hospital.
Castel del Piano's Alex Gibbs was unhappy with a (fairly innocuous-looking) challenge from Perugia captain Gianluca Comotto, and decided to convey his emotions with a punch and a vicious headbutt.
According to Football Italia, Comotto was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured nose. It will require surgery and he will be out of action for a month.
Castel del Piano President Robert Tromby offered his apologies after the game, but also pointed out that both players were given red cards. “Of course, that doesn’t take away from the fact our player’s behaviour was very serious indeed,” he stating-the-obvioused.
