DTotD: Ecuadorian friendly match abandoned following mass brawl

Dirty Tackle

Ecuador's LDU Portoviejo hosted Spanish-sounding-but-also-Ecuadorian side Barcelona Sporting Club on Wednesday evening. The visitors were leading 1-0 up until the 83rd minute, when a Portoviejo player went down in the box clutching his face after a challenge that appeared to strike him somewhere near the waist.

The incident clearly incensed Barcelona goalkeeper Damian Lanza, who punched opponent Hugo Vélez in the face in the lively debate the followed. A red card for the keeper then sparked a mass brawl that involved players, substitutes, staff members and the riot police. Meanwhile, fans in the stands caused trouble and reportedly threw bottles onto the field.

The match was billed as "Noche Verde y Blanca" ("Green and white night") and was a friendly match Portoviejo put on with top flight Barcelona ahead of their campaign in Ecuador's second division. Naturally, this uncompetitive tie between two sides who do not share a league ended with the referee abandoning the game amid scenes of chaos.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.
