DTotD: Israeli referee clashes heads with defender and prevents goalscoring opportunity

Dirty Tackle

Betar Jerusalem were 2-0 up in their Israeli Premier League match with Maccabi Petah Tikva on Sunday evening when Dušan Matović was fed a perfect through-ball on the edge of the area. However, the Serbian left-back wasn't able to collect the pass as he clattered straight into the inattentive referee.

The official and the defender suffered a painful-looking clash of heads, leaving both parties rolling on the floor in pain.

If the ref was an opposing player, he almost certainly would have conceded a free kick and earned a caution. Thankfully, neither was seriously injured by the 54th-minute incident and the game progressed.

Seeing as this match was part of the Isreali Premier League's relegation play-off round, a prevention of a goalscoring opportunity by an official could have had scandalous consequences. Fortunately for the referee, Betar Jerusalem were already ahead and went on to score again to win 3-0.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.
