DTotD: Irish defender commiserates goal by blasting ball into teammate's face

Dirty Tackle

In the moments after a team concedes a goal, it is quite common to see a frustrated defender kick the ball away in anger as it rolls out of the net. Sometimes, they will even blast it back into their own goal to convey their unbridled bitterness and passion to everyone watching. In Ireland on Friday night, this kind of post-goal anger had painful and hilarious consequences.

Shelbourne went top of the League of Ireland First Division with a 2-0 win over Finn Harps, with the first goal coming from a lovely free kick by midfielder Gareth Coughlan. As the ball trickled back onto the playing surface a Finn Harps defender attempted to blast the ball into the stands, but it only made it as far as the face of a teammate standing a few yards away.

The recipient of the rogue ball collapsed in pain, perhaps wondering if it was a mistake or a piece of constructive feedback on his set piece defending.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.
