When Darius Vassell arrived in Turkey for the first time as an Ankaragucu player, he was greeted by 3,000 overzealous fans screaming your name. Jermain Defoe's arrival in Toronto was more low key, seeing as he was given just a scarf and the puzzled looks of Canuck travellers. But the award for strangest airport arrival now goes to new Bologna signing Ibson, who found absolutely no one waiting to meet him when he arrived from Corinthians this week.
The Serie A side's staff had apparently completely forgotten about the arrival of the former Porto and Spartak Moscow midfielder, who was left to his own devices by the baggage carousel. Reuters reports:
Serie A strugglers Bologna have suspended four members of their technical staff after they apparently forgot to collect new signing Ibson from the airport, Italian media said on Monday.
Club president Albano Guaraldi was reportedly furious after the Brazilian arrived on Sunday, only to find there was nobody to greet him or pick up him.
Forgetting about the arrival of one of your winter signings does seem inexcusable — particularly when you only make two winter signings — but in future the Rossoblù will have to remember that it takes more than four people to pick up one player from the airport. Four or less and everyone will forget.
Brazilian star Ibson will help Bologna at Torino this weekend, provided they remember to put him on the bus.
