On Saturday, Bayern Munich beat Hoffenheim 7-1 -- an impressive showing and a very well timed one at that. Yet, it left Basel manager Heiko Vogel unimpressed going into the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie with a 1-0 lead against Bayern.
From the Guardian:
"The margin of victory does not impress me. I have absolutely no fear that Bayern will score seven goals in one game [against us]." The Basel manager, Heiko Vogel, did his best to play down the impact of Bayern's 7-1 humbling of Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
So what did Bayern do in that second leg match? They beat Basel 7-0 to advance to the quarterfinals on a 7-1 aggregate score. Mario Gomez scored four goals over 23 minutes himself, improving on the three he scored against Hoffenheim.
This is why you don't speak/tempt fate before a Champions League match. Mario Gomez will punish you for it.
