"Oh, there you are!"
First you don't see them, then you do.
Earlier today, reports surfaced that four North Korean players listed as absent in their game against Brazil — An Chol Hyok, Kim Myong Won, Kim Kyong Il, and Pak Sung Hyok — had possibly defected from King Jong Il's Prison of Horrors, the DPRK. "Possibly" here is media-speak for "we don't have any concrete source on this, but we all know they must've made a glorious run for it because what a story that would be!"
While some papers sensibly avoided mentioning the d-word in lieu of actual, old fashioned confirmation, the usual suspects got around it by using the ol' "it was rumored" trick. Now it seems the players were left off the team sheet after a "technical mix-up," and have since been spotted in training (although yet again, no source given on who "spotted" them and when).
Lots of tantalizing unanswered questions here, with the possibility of more information to come today at a North Korean news conference at noon ET. Still, this seems to be one of those cases where a little bit of information goes a long way for media outlets striving to see something that may or may not actually be there.
