No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney had hernia surgery this week, according to ESPN.com's Tania Ganguili.
Clowney had a groin issue. Went to Philadelphia to have it checked out. Had sports hernia surgery yesterday. #Texans— Tania Ganguli (@taniaganguli) June 13, 2014
Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said the team is hopeful that he'll be fine to return before the start of training camp in late July.
Clowney had been participating in OTAs but went to see a specialist when something wasn't quite right with his groin. The team has had a history with sports hernias and they didn't want to delay surgery — which is considered relatively minor — for Clowney.
Johnathan Joseph had sports hernias a couple years ago that he waited to treat. It's usually better to surgically repair it quickly. #Texans— Tania Ganguli (@taniaganguli) June 13, 2014
Clowney had been in a battle for playing time, defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel recently said. But Clowney won't be able to make another push for time, or a starting spot, until later this summer.
