The Texas Rangers and Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish have until Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET to make a deal or the team will get its $51.7 million posting fee back and Darvish will be a free agent.
Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reports that the main obstacle toward getting a deal done is a simple disagreement over how many years Darvish would play for the Rangers: Texas wants to commit to six years while the 25-year-old Darvish would like the team to sign on for five.
If the Darvish deal doesn't work out, the Rangers may throw their cash in the direction of slugging first baseman Prince Fielder, who visited the team on Friday, Passan notes. However, a deal between Darvish and Texas is still expected to get done: "The relationship between the Rangers organization and Darvish's camp is strong and respectful," sources tell Passan.
