The Washington Nationals are hoping to sign slugging free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder this offseason so it is being careful about how it throws around its dough these days. One of the team's own players that it would like to sign long-term is third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, but that would involve a significant promise of cash.
According to MLB.com, Zimmerman "has informed the team of the exact terms he would accept long-term." Two sources tell the site that "an agreement between Zimmerman and the Nationals is within reach."
The 27-year-old Zimmerman, who hit .289 with 12 homers last season in 101 games, is scheduled to be paid $12 million next season and $14 million for the following year.
UPDATE: Fielder was signed by the Detroit Tigers.
