Spillane ends U.S. drought in Nordic combined with silver

The United States had never won a medal of any color in the Nordic combined, a grueling event that combines ski jumping with cross-country skiing. That is over now, as Johnny Spillane took the silver at the spring distance.

Spillane was in the lead in the final curve but was overtaken in a breathtaking final 15 seconds by American-born French skier Jason Lamy Chappuis. Lamy Chappuis' final surge knocked Todd Lodwick out of medal contention.

Spillane started the day out well, taking fourth in the ski jump before skiing the best race of his life to win the U.S. its first medal in 86 years of the Nordic combined.
