While the sports world buzzed over LeBron James' New Year's Eve engagement, figure skating star Johnny Weir tied the knot. The former U.S. champion figure skater married boyfriend Victor Voronov over the weekend.
Weir hinted that something special was underway when on Dec. 30 he said via Twitter, "It's cold, dark, and very early, but something wonderful is afoot." The next tweet was, "I'm married!"
Voronov, who now lists his name on Twitter as Victor Weir-Voronov, is a Russian who has been in Weir's life for a long time, but the two recently reconnected.
"His name is Victor [Voronov], he's kind of everything that I've ever looked for and aspired to be in a relationship with. We've known each other for a long time and we reconnected over the summer, and it's just been a whirlwind.
"I'm very happy with my personal life and also my professional life, and I thank God I can be exactly where I'm at."
Weir competed in the 2006 and 2010 Olympics, and is known for flamboyant, artistically beautiful routines. Though his sexuality was often discussed, Weir stayed quiet on the subject until a year ago. He said that he was gay in his book.
He also said that the marriage to Voronov on New Year's Eve got all of "the official stuff" out of the way, but he will have a wedding this summer. Hopefully, it will include an appearance by Lady Gaga, Weir's favorite artist, and as many sequins and feathers as he had on his Olympic costume.
