German speedskater corners market on 4th-place finishes

In the '90s, the Buffalo Bills made it to the Super Bowl four times, and lost four times.

Daniela Anschutz-Thoms laughs at that. The German speedskater has finished in fourth place in major events – the Olympics, World Championships or European Championships – 15 times in her career.

It happened again Sunday in the 3000-meter long track. Anschutz-Thoms missed out on the medal stand by 0.03 seconds, less than the time it takes to blink.

After the race in Vancouver she moaned: "[Expletive]! [Expletive] follows me wherever I go! I made no mistakes. I’m endlessly disappointed." ... In the evening she washed down her frustration with a cold beer in a bar. Quietly she said: "This is a black day for me. It couldn’t possibly be any worse."

She has one more shot at a medal: Wednesday of next week, Anschutz-Thoms is skating in the 5000. If it doesn't work out for you, Daniela, know that you have friends here at Fourth-Place Medal.
