You might recall there were a lot of red herrings and false leads about the Olympic Opening Ceremony.
"The denial comes just hours after the 25-year-old short-track speedskater from Ste-Julie, Que., was accepting congratulations at a party that drew many of the Canadian medallists.
"Two federal government sources also confirmed Hamelin as flag-bearer prior to the COC's denial."
One Quebec media outlet even had a story that Hamelin was the flag bearer and an update saying he wasn't on its main page at the same time.
Who knows? The reaction online has been that Hamelin was about the third-best choice. A long-track speedskater, Clara Hughes, carried the flag in the Opening Ceremony, while another speedskater, Cindy Klassen, did so at the Turin Closing Ceremony.
This is one of those instances where speed didn't kill, but it certainly confused. And, in a related story, Gordon Lightfoot is still not dead.
