As if losing to the last-place Edmonton Oilers on home ice wasn't enough of an indignity, the Anaheim Ducks had to watch the game clinched on an errant pass by forward Corey Perry(notes) that traveled the entirety of the rink and into the Ducks' own empty net. Whoops:
The Ducks trailed 3-2 and had goalie Jonas Hiller(notes) pulled late in the third period. Ryan Getzlaf(notes) worked the puck behind the Edmonton net, where Perry corralled it. He sent a quick pass to the middle of the ice ... where nary a teammate could be located in either the slot or at the blue line.
The puck slid all the way down into the vacated net; defenseman Tom Gilbert(notes), the last Edmonton player to touch the puck before Perry, was credited with his third goal of the season in the 4-2 Oilers' victory.
Ouch, that's a rough way to see the game decided. Unless you're an Oilers player, because based on their reactions it's actually pretty hilarious. And did our eyes deceive us, or did Edmonton rookie Taylor Hall(notes) give the universal symbol for choking while his teammates celebrated the blooper?
In fairness, Hall had a goal and six shots in a strong 18:24 of ice time, so maybe he was feeling a little swagger. Or maybe he just realized it was Corey Perry who just scored on his own team.
