We're 26 days away from the 2011 NHL Winter Classic between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals at Heinz Field. Tonight, during the Sunday Night Football broadcast on NBC, the annual Winter Classic commercial debuted.
Given the slate of fantastic ads promoting previous Winter Classics as well as the Stanley Cup playoffs, prepare to be underwhelmed:A video or other embedded content has been hidden. Click here to view it.
Since the game will be nationally broadcast on NBC in the U.S. and CBC in Canada, Sidney Crosby(notes) and Alex Ovechkin(notes) being the main focus is no surprise, but our feeling after watching this is: "Is that it?"
A Sid/Ovie staredown followed by a torrential downpour turning into snowflakes?
We understand that football stadiums don't have much of a charm to them and that's what worked so well in the past two Winter Classic ads with the incorporation of Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. But considering we've been spoiled with classic spots like "No Words" before the Stanley Cup final last spring and of course, the legendary "Cup Raise" from a few years ago, this one was a letdown.
So what say you? Thumbs up? Thumbs down?
