PHILADELPHIA – The 30 picks have been made and the booing has stopped (for now), so let’s take a look back at the first day of the 2014 Draft in Philadelphia, which featured one blockbuster trade and some unmitigated predictability:
Best Trend: The Philadelphia fans chanting "SUCKS!" after each of the teams named during the pre-draft roll call. It really set the tone, people.
Worst Trend: That the top five picks went exactly how we all expected them to go: Aaron Ekblad to Florida, Sam Reinhart to Buffalo, Leon Draisaitl to Edmonton, Samuel Bennett to Calgary and Michael Dal Colle to the Islanders. Snore.
Best Booing: The Philadelphia fans in the arena booed … well, everything. Gary Bettman, the 29 teams not named the Flyers, former Flyer Rick Tocchet as he made a pick for the Penguins. Everything. But our favorite moment of booing was when Ilya Brzgalov was shown for approximately 3.2 seconds in a Minnesota Wild video montage. And they booed him too.
Best Bettman: As Mooney wrote of Bettman, “He eats your boos. He drinks them up.” So the constant, incessant jeering from the Flyers fans didn’t faze him. Our favorite moment, however, was when he ever-so-briefly cupped his ear before announcing the second pick in the draft, Hulk Hogan style. WHATCHU GONNA DO WHEN GARY BETTMAN RUNS WILD ON YOU?!
Best TSN Moment: Garth Snow saying critics “[crapped] on me too” when he was drafted like they are with Islanders pick Josh Ho-Sang.
Worst TSN Moment: Steve Yzerman no-selling a James Duthie joke about Marty St. Louis.
Best Local News: Anthony DeAngelo, a defenseman whose suspensions helped his stock fall on many mock draft projections, was taken at No. 19 by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Which was good news for the estimated 150 friends and family the South Jersey native had at the draft.
Best Nepotism: Kasperi Kapanen was projected to go around pick No. 12 but fell to No. 22 where the Pittsburgh Penguins drafted him. GM Jim Rutherford was familiar with Kapanen, having drafted his father Sami Kapanen with the Hartford Whalers. Or perhaps he simple saw “Kapanen” and assumed it was Sami. We don’t know, weird things are happening in Pittsburgh these days, man …
Worst Nepotism: In 2012, the New Jersey Devils picked 29th and selected Stefan Matteau, the son of the New York Ranger who ended their Stanley Cup dreams in 1994. In 2014, they picked 30th and had a chance to draft Brenden Lemieux, son of 1995 Conn Smythe Winner Claude Lemieux, who helped the Devils to their first Cup. And they passed on him…
Biggest First-Round Plummet: Ivan Barbashev of the QMJHL, projected in the mid-first round, tumbles into Day 2 of the Draft.
Best Nickname: Julius Honka of the Dallas Stars. Better known as “Honks.”
Best Hair, Player Division: William Nylander floopy DiCaprio-esque coif.
Best Hair, Executive Division: Brian Burke, moments before signing the Declaration of Independence.
Biggest Shock: The James Neal Trade, as the Penguins send Evgeni Malkin’s high-scoring winger to Nashville for Patric Hornqvist, Nick Spaling, cap savings and fewer man games lost to suspensions.
Biggest Tease: The Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks pulling off a trade that ended up being a swap of four picks and not the Patrick Sharp-for-Joe Thornton thing we all had in our heads when it was revealed the teams were talking.
Best Social Media Moment: The “Handsy Mom” photo featuring Leon Draisaitl that was tweeted by the Edmonton Oilers and then hastily deleted. (via opy_kanopy)
Best News: That there's a whole 'nother day of draft fun in Philly!
