Marleau got a secondary assist on Brent Burns’ first period (7:54 mark) rebound goal on Pittsburgh Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury. Marleau is San Jose’s all-time leader in points (1,000) and goals (462). Teammate Joe Thornton is the franchise leader in assists. Marleau is the 83rd player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points.
Here is a video of the play:
Marleau came into the game with 11 points in 19 games this season. He has been without center Logan Couture (fractured fibula) since mid-October. Marleau, 36, was picked second overall by the Sharks in the 1997 NHL Draft. He has spent his entire career with the organization and is 36th player to record at least 1,000 points with one franchise.
NHL.com had Marleau’s quotes from a CSN Bay Area interview between the first and second periods of the contest.
"It's great; it's something I'll remember always, and the boys out there, they're so excited for me, so it's good to see the smiles on their faces as well. Once you get it, you start throwing out all these different numbers, it helps put a smile on your face, that's for sure. It's a great honor to be able to play in this league and to have some success like I have, it's great, and like you said, I've got a lot more years ahead of me."
The Sharks have won four straight games on their current roadtrip. After Saturday’s contest at the Penguins they will play one more, Sunday at the Columbus Blue Jackets.
