Patrick Berglund’s name has been mentioned as part of the St. Louis Blues' bounty to get Ottawa Senators center Jason Spezza. Will those mentions be tempered by his signing a new 3-year deal with the Blues?
Berglund was a pending UFA coming off a 1-year deal worth $3.25 million last season. He had 32 points in 78 games for the Blues, his lowest points-per-game total since 2009-10.
Berglund appeared in 78 regular season games in 2013-14, recording 32 points (14 goals and 18 assists). He also appeared in four playoff games. Overall, Berglund has played in six NHL seasons in St. Louis, compiling 220 points (106 goals and 114 assists) in 436 career regular season games.
Internationally, the Vasteras native has represented Sweden on six occasions, including the 2014 Winter Olympics, where he earned the silver medal. Previously, Berglund captured the silver medal at both the 2011 World Championships and 2008 World Juniors, as well as bronze at the 2009 World Championships.
Jeremy Rutherford of the Post-Dispatch said that the contact is for $11.1 million, or an annual cap hit of $3.7 million. As far as Berglund’s future in St. Louis, Rutherford said the timing of the signing strikes him as curious.
One assumes it would be easier to move him with a contract signed…
