Nick Leddy signs a 7-year extension with Islanders
The Islanders have re-signed an important part of their young defensive core. According to Arthur Staple of Newsday, the Islanders have come to terms with Leddy, a 23-year-old blueliner to a seven-year term worth $38.5 million.
If this is the case, good for the Islanders, who acquired Leddy before the season to bolster their blueline.
New York's defensive core, which includes Leddy and Johnny Boychuk has been a major reason for the Islanders' success.
Per an Islanders release:
“Nick has proven to be an elite defenseman in this league at a young age,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. “He’s the type of player on the ice, in the locker room and in the community that we’re thrilled to add as a cornerstone of our defensive core.”
The only question would be the term -- seven years for a player who has never notched more than 37 points in a year is a lot. Also, at the age of 23, it's hard to know about Leddy's overall long-term potential. But these are common queries for young players with long-term deals -- see Nashville's seven year $28 million pact with Roman Josi -- which are becoming more and more frequent.
So in summation, Nick Leddy is coming to Brooklyn.
