The NHL is a melting pot of different players from around the world, which means lots of nameplates with lots of vowels. Saying some of the names is hard enough; spelling them, as you can see in this Yahoo Original Video, is pretty much mission: impossible.
We asked some of the NHL’s biggest stars to spell some of the NHL’s toughest names, including that of Dustin Byfuglien, the man-mountain defenseman for the Winnipeg Jets and the bane of many copy editors’ existence.
As you can see, the players sorta know which letters belong in the names, but aren’t exactly sure where they belong.
Our victims: Zdeno Chara, Boston Bruins; Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings; Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators; Ryan McDonagh, New York Rangers; Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles Kings; Tuukka Rask, Boston Bruins; James van Riemsdyk, Toronto Maple Leafs; Brandon Saad, Columbus Blue Jackets; and Ryan Suter, Minnesota Wild.
Among the names they’re tasked with in the Puck Daddy Spelling Bee: Zemgus Girgensons, Dustin Byfuglien, Mats Zuccarello and Jakob Silfverberg.
For the record: James van Riemsdyk should enter the national spelling bee. Obviously those born with challenging names are adept at tackling them.
