Monique Lamoureux just won a hockey championship. Which was nice, she said, because she hadn’t won one in a while.

It was an overtime win over the Montreal Stars in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League title game on Saturday, as her Boston Blades won the Clarkson Cup for the second time in three years. Lamoureux, a multiple time Olympian for the U.S. women’s national team, skated the Cup and partied in the locker room with her teammates.

Alas, the CWHL only has one Cup and no copies, so the Blades couldn’t bring it on their bus back to Boston – even though they tried to sneak it there.

We spoke with Monique Lamoureux on the Marek Vs. Wyshynski podcast on Monday, learning a bit more about her, the Blades and the CWHL, a league that’s gotten strong grassroots support this season but could use a high-profile boost.

Like, for example, having Montreal and Boston faceoff on the stadium sheet of ice that the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins will play on in Foxboro next January.

If the NHL makes it happen, Lamoureux is down for a CWHL game at the Winter Classic.

“If they did that, it would be absolutely phenomenal. Obviously they’re not putting in a ton of extra money if they already have Montreal and the Bruins playing there. You would think it would fall in line,” she told us.

The NHL has allowed local high-school and college teams to play outdoors at their events, despite having no affiliation with the leagues. They don’t have an affiliation with the CWHL either, but Monique Lamoureux hopes they might be able to lend support one day.

“You’d like to think in the near future the NHL will partner and give back to the women’s game, because in hockey right now the biggest room for growth is on the women’s side,” she said.

“As far as USA Hockey’s concerned, the biggest growth is on the women’s side.”
