Time’s running out on Martin Brodeur’s NHL career (or at least Cory Schneider hopes it is). So excuse the New Jersey Devils goalie for taking pause and experimenting with his iconic mask this season.
Or should we say … paws.
Brodeur has added his two bulldogs, Stan and Vez, to his mask for the 2013-14 season. As in Stanley and Vezina. Cute, right?
Painted once again by artist Sylvie Poitras of Airbrush Zap, the new mask combines the vintage style so many loyal fans have long associated with the future first ballot Hall of Fame goalie, with the family dogs, who each also made an appearance in Brodeur’s EA Sports Cover Vote campaign added to each side.
Vez appears on the right side, just above the shadow of the Vezina Trophy, with the number 4 in the middle to signify the four times Brodeur has won the award as the NHL’s top regular season goalie. Stan is opposite on the left, perched above a silhouette of the Stanley Cup, with the number 3 inside to signify Brodeur’s three championships with New Jersey.
You’ll notice Brodeur’s “MB30” logo throughout the mask like a watermark.
Any time you can add adorable pooches to a goalie mask it’s a good thing. But we have to wonder if Brodeur’s forgotten (in his old age) the bad voodoo that comes with flipping his lid. The Curse of MB30 lives!
