Justin Sawyer of ECHL proposes to girlfriend during game

Engagements at hockey games? Yawn ... been there, seen that: Down on one knee, using the Jumbotron and the PA announcer to do the heavy lifting.

What we haven’t seen before: A player asking his girlfriend to marry him at a hockey game. A hockey game he was playing in. During the first intermission. That's baller.

Justin Sawyer of the ECHL Elmira Jackals, a pugilistic defenseman with 66 penalty minutes in 16 games, surprised his girlfriend Morgan Porta by proposing on the ice – on one knee – during the first period intermission on Friday night, in a game against the Reading Royals.

She said yes, incidentally.

According to her Twitter, it was the first time she had a chance to see Sawyer and the Jackals in person. Needless to say, she left with something slightly better than a magnetic calendar.

Sawyer finished with no points and one shot on goal. But he managed to stay out of the penalty box, perhaps not coincidentally.
