NEW YORK – After the first period of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Los Angeles Kings did something they hadn’t done in the first two games of the series: Hold a lead.
Albeit for 0.7 seconds.
Jeff Carter of the Kings rifled a shot that deflected past Henrik Lunqvist for the 1-0 Kings lead, beating the buzzer at the end of the first period. It was his 10th of the postseason.
That was Justin Williams with the assist, his 24th point in 24 playoff games and sixth point in three playoff games.
And that was Dan Girardi, having a terrible Stanley Cup Final for the Rangers, whose diving skates hit the puck and deflected it past Lundqvist, making the Madison Square Garden crowd fall silent.
The lead was the first one they had in their last 249 minutes and 14 seconds of playoff hockey.
The Kings would go on to win the game, 3-0, and push the Rangers to the brink of elimination in Game 4 on Wednesday night.
