BRONX, N.Y. -- When deciding on what pads to wear for Sunday's Stadium Series game against the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundvist had a few options, but only one of them made sense given the venue.
As Lundqvist and his Rangers teammates made their way out on to the ice at Yankee Stadium in New York, he fit right in with the baseball team that calls the place home. Protecting his legs were goalie pads with a pinstripe theme, matching his mask, which features Yankees legends Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig.
"I understand not all Rangers fans are Yankees fans but at the same time we are playing at Yankee Stadium," Lundqvist told ESPN New York Friday. "I hope whatever I go with the fans will be happy. In the end the equipment also needs to feel right when I'm out there."
Lundqvist is a Yankees fan, so the choice makes sense.
The equipment may have felt right, but everything went wrong for Lundqvist in the first period as he allowed three goals and the Devils took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission.
