Devils, NHL meet; Kovalchuk contract decision in next 24 hours

There was talk over the weekend that Ilya Kovalchuk(notes) and the New Jersey Devils would submit a contract to the NHL early this week, exactly two weeks after arbitrator Richard Bloch ruled in favor of the NHL's rejection of Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million deal.

The talk appears accurate: Puck Daddy can confirm a report by's EJ Hradek that Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek, general managers Lou Lamoriello and Kovalchuk's agent Jay Grossman met with NHL officials and presented the terms of a new contract for Kovalchuk.

A decision on the newly submitted deal -- no details are being leaked on its value or length -- is expected in the next 24 hours.
