In the last six seasons, David Backes of the St. Louis Blues has missed a grand total of three games.
The question for the Blues after their overtime loss on Monday night to the Ottawa Senators was whether their captain would add to that total, after leaving the game in staggering pain following a second-period collision with Colin Greening.
Oof. Backes wouldn’t return to the game after what the team called an upper body injury. Greening hit him high after Backes had lunged for the puck. The woozy reaction obviously conjures some concussion concerns, but no word yet from the Blues.
The team is already missing Vladimir Sobotka and Jaden Schwartz to upper body injury. But any time missed by Backes would be a significant blow: He’s in the midst of his best offensive season in the NHL in both goals (0.52) and points (0.97) per game, playing on that powerhouse line with Alex Steen and TJ Oshie.
Brendan Morrow moved up to play with that duo after Backes’ injury.
We'll update with any news from the postgame.
